As early college students, one concern that makes us unique from other high school students is whether all the hard work we put into obtaining college credits will be transferred by our colleges of interest.
What We Know For Sure:
CUNY schools will take all credits
Ivy Leagues, such as Harvard and Princeton, will take very few, if any, of our credits because they want students to get the full “college experience” for all 4 years
There are 4 other types of colleges:
- SUNY/ New York Public
- Private Colleges
- Out of State Public
- Out of Country
For these colleges, transferring credits is handled on a case-by-case basis, so there is no set amount of credit they would take. However, there are certain things you as an early college student can do now to better your chances of getting your credits transferred.
- Aim to earn a grade of C or higher in all of your classes
- Hang on to all of your syllabi for all your college classes. This will be a good resource to confirm with college admission offices that you have taken specific college level courses
- You should be aware that certain electives may not transfer. For example, an art elective might be less likely to transfer than a Calculus class
- Try to take the highest levels of fundamental classes, such as math, english, and history
- If you already know what you want to study in college, try to load up on courses that will be required by your desired major
- Lastly, start researching your colleges of interest so that you have a good understanding of what the college transfer policies are
